Window Replacement Benefits

Many people think of window replacements as a “must-do” chore to prevent costly headaches like mold growth, rot, and high energy costs from drafts.

And that part is certainly true. If you’re seeing any of the danger signs like fogging between panes, soft or rotting sills and trim, or peeling and flaking paint on the exterior, it’s definitely time to think about replacing them.

But there are other reasons to replace old windows, even if yours are in the best of repair.

Health and Esthetics

4-6% of people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it’s estimated that a further 10-20% experience a milder form of winter blues. Natural light is the most common treatment for this disorder.

But natural light makes most things more enjoyable. Sunshine is flattering and cheerful, and nearly every house can do with more of it. Modern windows are not only larger, but the frames themselves are smaller, allowing for more glass area to let the light shine in.

Finally, windows are a striking architectural detail both inside and out. And everyone wants to live in a beautiful home.

Resale Value

The natural result of people wanting to live in beautiful homes is that homes that are particularly handsome sell for more than those that are merely functional.

Large, attractive new windows give buyers all the benefits listed in the section above, plus the equally attractive lack of maintenance. Everyone loves the look of those quaint old multi-paned windows, right up until the day the paint starts to peel. Modern vinyl and aluminum windows can reproduce these charming windows, and never require any maintenance whatsoever.

With so many people working longer hours and commuting further distances, a house that needs very little maintenance is worth the investment.

Green Benefits

The most touted benefit of new windows is how energy-efficient they are. And that certainly is a perk. Sealing up the drafts can have a dramatic effect on your energy bill, and you don’t have to bundle up in your own home anymore.

But did you also know about some of the benefits of the new glass treatment technologies?

Double and triple-paned windows are factory sealed to prevent fogging and create a thermal barrier. In addition, the space between the panes is not filled with ordinary air, it is filled with inert gases like argon. Argon is not only denser than air (creating a better thermal barrier) it does not contain any microscopic quantities of water like air would, which would cause unsightly condensation between the panes.

The glass is also typically treated with a UV film. There are a number of varieties of these treatments, each with its own purpose, but at a minimum they block UV radiation. This prevents not only the fading of carpets, paint and upholstery on the other side of the glass, but also reduces the solar heat gain in the summer, making your house more efficient to keep cool.
