Style Roofing Encourages Homeowners to Prepare Siding and Roofing Systems for Summer Weather

This spring, mother nature has been on overdrive! Normal scattered showers have been replaced by this season’s extreme hail and downpours, affecting nearly every region of the United States. As experienced roofing installers, Style Roofing of Northern Virginia know first-hand how destructive intense weather can be on one’s home. Because a property’s exterior is its first line of defense against the elements, it is essential that all home and business owners make sure that their siding and roofing systems are prepared to withstand the challenge!

While it doesn’t hurt to have a couple extra tarps and buckets on hand in case of emergency, Style Roofing points out some things a home or business owner can do before their property’s exterior takes-on any more extreme weather:

  1. Seriously examine the property’s exterior for any damages. Pointing out and tackling current repairs now will save you from an incredibly high siding and roof replacement cost later on. If a home or business doesn’t have an exterior that can withstand heavy storms, it’s better to fix it before the it begins to downpour. Good places to check for roof penetration include: around the chimney, vents, skylights, walls, flashing, air-conditioning elbows and stands, antennas, support wires or satellite dishes.
  2. Make sure to check for worn-out shingles, as they’ll be the first to go during extreme weather. If one discovers shingles that have varied in color, it is important to repair or replace them immediately.
  3. If there are minor cracks, patch them along the seams. However, be cautious as to how many patches are laid down–too many can put a band-aid over the existing problem, but will keep the future cost to replace roof and siding systems down.
  4. Trimming any tree branches that hang over the property’s roofing system is always a good idea, as they can break during a storm potentially causing damage to the roof. (They have even been known to fly through windows!)
  5. Clean the rain gutters thoroughly, removing any accumulated leaves, branches, or other debris. Keeping gutters clear and downspouts pointed away from a property can prevent damage to siding systems.

Taking these simple, but important preventative measures before a heavy storm hits can save any property owner a lot of time, money, and aggravation. Once again, Style Roofing of Northern Virgina wants to emphasize that a property’s exterior is its first and most important line of defense against any elements. As an army wouldn’t send an untrained soldier into battle, don’t let a roofing and siding system be ill-prepared. If unsure of whether to repair or replace, it is always a good idea to contact experienced siding and roofing installers for advice. Not only will they give a home or business owner a better idea of what course of action is best, it’ll give a customer a piece of mind about the exterior systems protecting themselves and their families.
